Varied ecosystem
and habitats of debrigarh sanctuary which comprises of
mountains, villages, grasslands and fresh water systems
provides a range of transitional zones which support a very
rich of floral and faunal population.
These
transitional zones supporting a complex food web, makes
the sanctuary a heavenly abode for all its wild inhabitants.
The Hirakud
reservoir provides a suitable breeding ground for the
migratory avifauna. Population of some of the winter
migrants are quite high when compared to those at Chilika
and Bhitarkanika.
Some of the plants and animals found at Debrigarh are listed below
Flora: Debrigarh sanctuary
consists of mixed vegetation such as Bija, Sal Sisoo Bandhan
Muhuf, Ohaura, Karada, Harda, Ainla, Bahada, Domkurdu etc.
Salia bamboo is scattered through out the sanctuary. There
is plenty of grass lands inside the sanctuary. Sal is a
gregarious and mostly confined to foot hills, valleys
and shelter pockets where moisture status of soil is
moderate. Vegetation on hill slopes and upper pation is
predomintly miscellanous casitngs of high propation of Anogeissus latifolia (Dhaura), Lannea coromandelica (Moi), Boswellia serrata (Salai), Cleistanthus collinus(Karda) and Dallergia paniculata (Barabakulea).
Fauna: The major wild life includes Panthera tigris (Tiger), Panthera pardus (Leopard), Bos gaurus (Gaur), Cervus unicolor ( Samber), Axis axis (Spotted Deer), Tetracerus quadricornis (Four horned: antelope), Melursus ursinus (Sloth bear), Sus scrofa (Wild boar), Semnopithecus entellus (Langur), Hystrix cristata (Percupine), Ratufa
indica (Malabar giant squirrel) , Paradoxurus
hermaphroditus (Common Civet),
etc. Among avifauna, Pavo cristatus (Peafowl), ;Coracias
benghalensis (BIue jay), Covus macrorhynchos (Jungle crow), Gallus gallus murghi (spur
fowl), varieties of Spilornis cheela (eagle) and Ketupa zeylonensis (Owls) etc. Migratory birds such
as Podiceps cristatus (Great crested grebe), Tadorna ferruginia (Brahminy duck), Anas accuta (Pintail Shoveller), Anas strepera(Gadwal), Aythya fuligula (Tufted Pochard) and several other water ducks are
seen during 'winter.
